But these outriggers are many times in the way of getting the rolling ladder close to the racks or shelving sideways with the handrails running parallel to the beams on the pallet racks. And they cost hundreds of dollars. So, the end user frequently takes them off so that he doesn't have to reach so far. Also, there is a requirement for 42" high handrails. Out of state manufacturers will give you only 36" high handrails. These requirements cost more. Are they worth it? How much is your life worth, or broken arm worth if your rolling ladder falls over during an earthquake? Or if you fall over the guard rail because it isn't tall enough. So don't buy them on the Internet from out of state sources or you might get burned. 3. Did you know that all RACKS AND SHELVING ARE REQUIRED TO BE ANCHORED TO THE FLOOR in California? Even filing cabinets are to be anchored. Sometimes you may be required to have the anchoring process inspected and use special anchors depending on what the engineer or architect specifies. We use Hilti TZ anchors that have a circle around the shaft that is at the 3.5" required embedment height on the anchor shaft. If you can see the circle then the anchor is not properly embedded. 4. Do you know what "SEISMIC DESIGN" means? It means "EARTHQUAKE Resistant" and it changes from year to year. 5. Did you know that CALIFORNIA IS IN SEISMIC ZONE 4 and requires more stringent safety codes for earthquakes than any other states east of us? So, if you buy racks from other states, they may not be safe in California. ALL PALLET RACKS NEED A BUILDING PERMIT TO INSTALL. YOU NEED SEISMIC DESIGN PALLET RACKS TO GET THE PERMIT. We use an engineer to calculate the weight of the loads you are placing on the racks vs. the rack capacity vs. the levels you stack upon vs. the thickness of the concrete slab and makeup of the concrete vs. the proximity you are to known fault lines. These calculations and drawings must be done for each brand of racks, different capacities and different loads to get a building permit. Chinese made pallet racks will not be able to get a permit because they have no quality control of their steel like the US manufactures do. Also used racks will not be able to get a permit because the footplates are not large enough. And if you cannot get a permit on your pallet racks, cantilever racks, push-back racks or shelving then they are illegal in the state of California because Cal-OSHA Law requires that all pallet racks and shelving over 5'8"h are subject to seismic review. I repeat: IF YOU CANNOT GET A PERMIT ON YOUR RACKS THEN THEY ARE ILLEGAL IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. Several companies that have been importing Chinese made racks have been told to stop selling these racks in California. 6. Don't forget your loading dock. Materials need to flow smoothly in and out of the warehouse so YOU NEED THE PROPER DOCK LEVELER to transition from the dock to the truck bed height, LOADING LIGHTS to illuminate the inside of the truck, and DOCK SHELTERS to prevent loss of heat from the warehouse. You will also need WHEEL CHOCKS and ICC BUMPER LOCKS to prevent trucks from pulling away from the dock until the forklift driver is out of the truck. This will prevent lost loads, lost time due to injuries, and damage to the forklift. 7. If you are moving into a building and pulling a BUILDING PERMIT to make modifications to the building you will have inspectors going over the modifications to make sure they meet all applicable building, electrical, fire and safety codes. When they do this, they will ask you for your PALLET RACK SEISMIC CALCULATIONS AND DRAWINGS to show that they meet codes. We can do them for you. and we can assist you in pulling the permits. We charge for this. If you don't have a building permit for your pallet racks you may be forced to start the process in 10 days or have your electricity turned off. Anyone from PGandE or the fire department has the authority to ask you for your permit. 8. If you choose to wait until all the inspectors are through to install your racks YOU RUN THE RISK OF BEING SUED BY AN EMPLOYEE WHO HAS BEEN HURT IN AN ACCIDENT or an earthquake that could happen any time. This could cost you an increase in insurance premiums if not loss of insurance coverage. If you lose insurance coverage then you may lose your business. We aren't the cops we are merely providing enough information for you to make an informed decision. 9. Did you know there is an OSHA REQUIREMENT FOR WIDTH OF AISLE in every room for a wheel chair to turn around? 10. Did you know that NETTING MAY BE REQUIRED ON THE TOP LEVEL OF YOUR RACKS to prevent materials from falling on people working below? 11. Do you know WHAT KINDS OF FORKLIFTS TO USE TO MAXIMISE THE STORAGE OF MATERIALS IN YOUR WAREHOUSE vs. the aisle space required? Electric forklifts are very reliable for the 1st 5 years but after that the battery starts wearing out and will cost $8000 dollars to replace. So don't buy an 8-year-old forklift for $1500 and have to replace the battery for $8000 in less than a year. You might as well have started with a $9500 forklift. 12. Do you have to maintain the "first in, first out" movement of materials? Or, if there is no shelf life or obsolescence, is "last in, first out" okay? If so, you could benefit from VERY DENSE STORAGE USING "DRIVE-IN RACKS". 13. THE NUMBER 1 THING TO LOOK FOR IN THE SELECTION OF A WAREHOUSE that you are going to put pallet racks into IS WHETHER IT HAS SPRINKLERS OR NOT. If it doesn't have sprinklers then you will not be permitted to build your racks. And all pallet racks need a building permit in CA. You will not be able to stack any higher than 5'-8" or about the height of one pallet on the ground. Since most older warehouses have a ceiling height of 14' or less you are losing over half of the space you are paying for. Oh sure, you can get cheap rent on these warehouses that are usually older and out of date. But they are not that cheap (less than half the price of warehouses with sprinklers). But let's suppose you have a fire and lose everything. Your insurance won't cover it because you didn't have sprinklers. Can you afford to self-insure by taking a loss on your entire inventory? Would that put you out of business? Or suppose that the fire occurs at night when no one is around to report it and the fire burns an adjacent business because there were no sprinklers to put it out. Does your insurance cover that? Would the fire alarm wake up anyone in time? Usually, warehouses are located in industrial areas with no houses around. 14. We no longer sell non-seismic used equipment because our insurance company won't insure us if we keep on selling used equipment that is not seismic design/earthquake resistant. Check with your insurance company to see if they will insure you if you buy used racks. It is almost impossible to get a permit on used equipment because the specifications change each time we have an earthquake making footplates larger and doubling the columns (called backers) for heavier loads that don't have the first beam height until 5' high which is very common. And don't buy Chinese made racks because they don't have quality control like American racks do so no engineer will put his wet stamp on the calculations that are necessary to get your permit. Catalog houses sell pallet rack all over the US and do not make them seismic design for Cal-OSHA standards unless you stipulate that you need it for California seismic design. We sell NEW SEISMIC DESIGN AMERICAN MADE PALLET RACKS that will permit. They cost more but they are worth it. 15. If you are STORING 12' LONG ROLLS OF CARPET using 2 rows of pallet racks with 4' of space between them then pay attention to the capacity of the beams. You would think that if you have 2 beams in the front with 2000 lbs. capacity and 2 beams in the back with 2000 lbs. capacity then you have 4000 lbs. capacity which is plenty for the 4 rolls of carpet I am putting on 2 pairs of 8' beams. But you did not think about when the fire starts, the sprinklers go off and add a lot of weight to the carpet with the water that soaks up into the carpet. So now the carpet weighs up to twice as much as it used to when dry. So, you should design the beams to have twice the capacity of the weight of the carpet rolls you are putting on the beams.
